Doggie Soup Kitchen Opens in Berlin

Through the years there has been much discussion if the truly poor or even homeless should be allowed to own pets. When it comes to homeless people, the debate becomes even more heated with people on both sides having valid points of view. Any pet owner knows that companion animals enrich their adopted family's lives in more ways than can be counted. All of that also holds true for the homeless and when it comes to dogs, the issue of the pet providing its owner with protection rises to a whole new level.

In a much talked about Reuters new story, one Berlin resident has come down decidedly on the side of the poor and homeless and their pets. Claudia Hollm, runs a company called Animal Board that has opened a soup kitchen for dogs where she provides free meals to dogs with owners unable to afford to feed their pets themselves. Many criticize her efforts and suggest it would be more fruitful if directed towards the human owners of these pets. I have seen homeless people literally take food out of their own mouths to feed their beloved companions and love this idea; so in many ways she is helping feed people in need.

What a wonderful idea and I truly hope it catches on.
